President Rubiela opened the ceremony with a heartfelt message of welcome, emphasizing the significance of the moment for the local community and beyond. She described the Peace Pole as a timeless symbol of hope, harmony, and understanding—one that will continue to inspire generations to come.
She also highlighted the global meaning of the initiative, reminding attendees that this installation connects Aruba to a worldwide movement dedicated to unity and respect across cultures. In closing, she expressed sincere gratitude to the Peace Pole Committee for their dedication and effort in bringing the vision to life, ending with the universal message: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”
Past President Diego followed with a powerful reflection on awareness and empathy. He encouraged those present to “pay attention”—to ourselves, to others, and to our environment—emphasizing that peace begins with conscious awareness. He connected the project to Rotary’s enduring mission of service and understanding, noting that peace extends beyond the absence of conflict to include harmony with both humanity and nature. Following his remarks, he joined the divers in the water to personally assist in the placement of the Peace Pole.
While the installation was completed beneath the surface, guests were treated to a graceful and uplifting artistic swimming performance by the Barracudas Aruba team. Their performance offered a vivid expression of harmony and movement, beautifully reflecting the spirit of the occasion.
The installation at Tres Trapi now stands as a landmark achievement: the first underwater Peace Pole in the world. Set in a beloved snorkeling location where sea turtles are often seen grazing, the Peace Pole carries the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish, connecting Aruba to a global network of more than 250,000 Peace Poles worldwide.
Engineered for durability and environmental harmony, the structure is made of reinforced concrete with an epoxy-sand coating, designed to withstand the marine environment while encouraging natural marine growth. It is safely positioned in approximately 12 feet of water, 55 meters from shore, and fully protected from boat traffic.
The project was made possible with the support of Rotary International and was honored by the presence of Past Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick and Past District Governor Debbie Roopchand, whose attendance underscored the global significance of the occasion.
In closing reflections, FR Diego captured the essence of the initiative, sharing that the Peace Pole serves as a reminder to all visitors of the importance of peace within our world, our communities, our minds, and our relationship with nature.
Following the ceremony, celebrations continued at Tierra del Sol, where FR Ravee generously opened his home to members, partners, and guests. The evening of fellowship provided a warm and meaningful conclusion to a truly historic day, strengthening the bonds of friendship and service that define the Rotary family.
We extend our sincere thanks to FR Ravee for his hospitality—and for the memorable house tour that added a special touch of fun to an unforgettable evening.
